Arsenal fell at the final hurdle once again, losing the Carling Cup final 2-1 to Birmingham City yesterday. Nicola Zigic and a late Obefemi Martins goal put the Gunners to the sword. It’s the third final the North London outfit have lost since their last silverware since winning the 2005 FA Cup, having lost 2-1 both to Barcelona in the 2006 Champions League final, and to Chelsea in the 2007 League Cup. Unlike the other two though, Arsenal were clear favourites, and only an unforgettable mix-up between Lorient Koscielney and Wojciech Szczesny allowed Martins an easy tap in and the Brumbies t

You’re thousands of miles from home and you get a sudden urge for a Tootsie Roll. Or a Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup. Or a Payday. Or some Milk Duds.
If you happen to be in Prague, you’re in luck – all you need to do is pop down to the new Prague Candy Store.
The creation of 22 year old Czech entrepreneur, the very likeable Marek Čermák, The Candy Store came about when he became frustrated trying to buy his favourite American treats that his father used to bring back from business trips to the US when he was a kid. There have been and still are other places that sell American candies in the city but annoyed by the seeming random availability and excessive prices as well as having to travel across the city only to find the object of his desire sold out, Marek took a straw-poll amongst his Facebook friends to gauge interest in a shop dedicated to American candy.
With the full product list available for online ordering on the website, The Candy Store is already a step ahead. The retail store, almost a candy boutique, opened on Monday 12th September and is located a short walk from I.P. Pavlova Metro Station and within a few minutes walk from the city centre.
Word about the store is spreading fast, with more than two hundred Facebook fans already. Marek’s biggest surprise so far has been the percentage of Czech customers to expats. He had expected fewer Czechs to drop by for a candy bar but so far he estimates 70% of his customers are in fact Czechs who have spent time in the US.
What about Whatchamacallits?
Yep, they’ve got those too. Marek’s keeping a list of all the other things people ask for though and hopes to keep his customers happy by adding to the range with subsequent shipments.
More than candy
It’s not all candy bars, the store carries breakfast cereals too – classics like Lucky Charms and Fruit Loops, with more varieties to come. A fridge full of soft drinks such as Mountain Dew can help slake your thirst or be tempted by the display case full of locally produced American-style cupcakes, cheesecake, brownies and carrot cake.
Some English favourites too
In a nod to the city’s British expat population there are a few items of UK provenance too – Curly Wurly’s, Walker’s Crisps and Maltesers are all on the shelves.

Renewable chemicals and fuels company Amyris, Inc. and Michelin have signed a definitive agreement to collaborate in the development and commercialization of Amyris No Compromise renewable isoprene, the chemical building block in rubber tires and other products that use synthetic and natural rubbers.
Under the agreement, Amyris and Michelin will partner to contribute funding and technical resources to develop Amyris’ technology to produce isoprene from renewable feedstocks. Amyris expects to begin commercializing this isoprene in 2015 for use in tire and other specialty chemical applications such as adhesives, coatings and sealants. Michelin is committed to off-take volumes on a ten-year basis. In addition, Amyris retains the right to market its renewable isoprene to other customers.
Amyris’s technology, currently used to produce at commercial scale a 15-carbon molecule called farnesene, can also convert plant-based sugars into isoprene, a 5-carbon molecule and main ingredient in the production of synthetic rubber. Isoprene has traditionally been produced as a by-product of the thermal cracking of naphtha to produce ethylene or via C4 refinery stream synthesis. As the petrochemical industry adjusts to lighter cracking slates with the advent of shale gas, new sources of isoprene have become necessary.

As Sir Alex Ferguson might say: Football – bloody hell!
Of course, the Manchester United boss might have delivered a slightly more expletive-laden verdict to his players after this game, but for the famous ‘neutrals out there’ this was some game. I certainly learnt two important lessons. Firstly, never write your intro at half time and secondly, statistics can only tell you so much before a game. I’ll not trouble you with the redundant intro, but what of those statistics?
Manchester United had won their last 20 home games in all competitions, were unbeaten at hom
