Shantytowns

January 17th, 2009

Brno was an industrial town until 1990s. After World War I, many poor workers could not afford to pay rent, so they had to (often illegally) built small quarters of tiny houses in abandoned localities. Nowadays these places are romantic reminders of a sad past. Kamenná kolonie is the biggest shantytown in Brno (and probably in the Czech Republic); built in the 1920s in an abandoned stone pit at Kamenná Street in quarter Stránice (southern of the town’s centre, available by tramlines 5 and 7). During the 1960s the houses were bought by young musicians, photographers, painters and sculptors, who created a kind of hippie community, which lasts until today. Smaller and not so preserved shanty towns can be found in Lesná quarter (Divišova kolonie and kolonie Písečník, both available by bus lines 84 and 44; stops “Divišova čtvrť” and “Lesná, nádraží” respectively). Podstránská kolonie can be accessed by tramline 10.
