Restaurants are notably cheaper in the centre of Brno than in the centre of Prague, with prices of meals usually starting at 80 CZK (2.8€) and beer for not more than 35 CZK (1.25€) per glass. A shot of espresso varies from 25 to 40 CZK,; the same is for a glass of wine. Smoking is allowed (although it is sometimes regulated, for example banned during lunchtime) in most areas of pubs and restaurants. Unless a place is specifically labelled as non-smoking, expect to breathe in some second hand smoke.

Restaurants

Pod radničním kolem at Mečová 5 (in the complex of the Old Town Hall) offers a wide selection of Moravian wines. Moravian folklore music is played on Thursday and Friday evenings. The interiors of U Švejka restaurant at the higher upper side of Česká Street are is designed in the old fashion way, looking just like the pubs in the 19th century. The restaurant in Reduta theatre at Zelný trh Ssquare is renowned for pasta and dishes prepared from fish. The pizza parlour in Avion Hotel at Česká Street offers has a popular garden during summer.

Oriental cuisines

The Indian restaurant Taj-Mahal is located at Běhounská 12. A Chinese restaurants can be found at Průchodní 1, Pekařská 42 and Marešova 14. The food is prepared by native cooks in all of these restaurants.

Pubs

Renowned for the best PilsenPilsner beer offered in Moravia, pub U Bláhovky (or simply “Bláhovka”) is so popular that during the warmer part of the year, guests drink their beers standing on the pavement in front of the crowded restaurant (which is tolerated by police until 10 P.M.). The roasted pork knee (I think this is pork hock, rather than a knee) and cheese tidbits are also worthy of your attention. Bláhovka is located on the corner of Grohova and Stojanova Street, ten minutes walk northwest from the town’s centre.

A brewery-pub producing original types of beer (including herbal beer) called Pegas is located in the very centre of the town, at Jakubská Street 4, with an affiliate at Jaselská Street 8. „Zelená kočka“ at Solniční Street 8 is a restaurant renowned for beer from a small brewery in Dalešice, with a wide offering of meat dishes. „Potrefená husa“ at the corner of Joštova Sstreet and Moravian Square is popular among young urban proffessionals and offers a wide choice of beer. Absolut cocktail bar [http://www.absolutbar.cz/] at Jánská 21 has the widest choice of cocktails in Brno.

Fast food

Besides the ubiquitous McDonalds and KFC, there are many small fast food outlets in Brno; actually, allmost every Street in the centre has one. One local speciality is “burek“, pie stuffed with meat, potatoes or cottage cheese, usually for 25 CZK (1 euro). Hot dogs cost 12 CZK (0.5 euro), a slice of pizza 15 to 25 CZK. The hygienical conditions of fast food restaurants are checked regularly. A popular non-stop fast food shop is located at Kobližná Street.

Vegetarian restaurants

In almost every restaurant, at least one kind of vegetarian meal is offered, but there are also several restaurants offering only meatless food. Rebio is located at Orlí Street 26, close to thean old town gate. Na cestě is located at Bašty Street 2, near the main train station. Spirála can be found in the second floor of shopping mall at Street 3. These restaurants are open during workdays only,; only Rebio is opened for lunch on Saturday. lunch too.

Cafés

Smoke-free Bakala café is located at Komenského Ssquare, in a large white building beyond the Red Church. Its specialties are “le grande juice“ (big glass of juice, water and fresh fruits), hot lemonade with honey, and strawberries with chocolate and ginger. In Café 99 at Úvoz Street 56, many board games are available for the guests. Air Café in the building of the Moravian museum at Zelný trh Square is well known for a wide variety of cocktails and the Royal Air Force memorabilia decorating the place. Café Onyx at Zámečnická Street 1 is a noble one; sushi is served each Friday, and even fashion shows are occasionally held there.

Tea rooms

Dobrá čajovna tearoom at Římské Square offers the longest opening hours (11AM to 11PM each day) and is one of the biggest tea rooms in Brno. Drinking high quality tea and smoking waterpipe is also possible at Skleněná louka tearoom at Kounicova 23. A kettle of tea costs from 40 to 120 CZK (1.4 to 4.3 euro), depending on its quality.
