Public transporation
The historic centre is compact enough that it is possible to reach all sights and attractions on foot within several minutes. For longer trips within the town, public city transport is the best choice, because parking may be quite problematic in many parts of Brno. In addition to that, the vehicles of mass transportation often use dedicated traffic lanes, so they can quickly drive through the town even during traffic jams. The lines of tramways, buses and trolley buses lead to every corner of Brno, the intervals are usually short. Signs marking passenger stops show the number of the route, as well as times of arrivals. Most stops also have a map showing the destination.
Tickets for public transport can be bought in tobacco shops and in yellow, coin operated dispersers located at bigger stations. The official store of the Public city transport company at Novobranská 18 is also a good choice, due to the possibility of paying with a credit card. Tickets for 10 minutes costs 8 CZK (0.3€), 40-minutes tickets cost 13 CZK (0.45€), children can ride for 4 and 6 CZK. Those tickets are limited to two zones, but this is always more than enough, even for travelling to the suburbs in Brno.
Passengers must stamp their tickets immediately after boarding. Insert the ticket into the yellow box installed close to each door. Keep the ticket, as it is valid for transfers too. Passengers without valid tickets can be fined up to several thousand Czech crowns. Undercover controllers will demand to see your ticket, and you must pay the fine on the spot in cash.
Passengers with baby carriages are encouraged to signal to the driver with a wave, so they will leave the door open for a longer time.
The stops are distinguished by blue or red stands displaying route numbers and time tables. “Všední dny“ denotates schedule for workdays, “prázdniny“ stands for holiday, “sobota“ for Saturday and “neděle“ for Sunday.
On all lines, approximately one vehicle accessible by disabled persons departs every hour. They are marked with the sign of a wheelchair in the schedule.
Standard routes run between 4AM and 11PM. During night, ten lines of night buses (numbered 90 to 99) depart from behind the main train station each hour (every half an hour on Fridays and Saturdays), connecting to all the larger suburbs and back. Those buses may be crowded, but they are a very cheap and popular alternative to late night taxis.
Lines with numbers higher than 100 go to various places of southern Moravia; it is possible to travel with them within Brno using ordinary tickets. Tickets for further distances can be bought from their drivers.
