The name Bodrum has changed many times over the years. The city was initially called Halikarnassos by the satrap Mausollos. After his death – in 352 BC – he was buried in the mausoleum which is one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. Halikarnassos eventually became Petronion, which then became Bodrum in Turkish. In the 1920s, Bodrum was so remote that it was used as a place of exile. Perhaps this is why the city attracted artists and bohemians and in the 1970s Bodrum developed into “Turkey’s St. Tropez” with a busy entertainment and night life. Numerous Turkish celebrities live in the holiday villas in and around the city. The city centre is small and easy to negotiate and most things are within walking distance. The city’s main street runs parallel with the water and the sea is never far away in Bodrum. Even though Bodrum has developed into a jet-set favourite, it’s easy for the “ordinary” tourist to find the popular places in the city or the surrounding villages. In the shipyard, the traditional tirade and gullet boats are still built and these can be hired for short or long trips along the wonderfull coastline.

Bodrum Peninsula is situated on the southwest coast of Turkey, in the eastern Aegean cost. The Peninsula extends 42 km in the E-W direction & 6km – 23.8 km in the N-S direction between the bays of Gulluk and Gokova.

Covering an area of 649 km2 its highest elevation is measured as 690 m. The Bodrum Peninsula is surrounded by 32 islands and islets and forms a 174 km long coastline. Villages on the north coast were more successful with fishing.

The beautiful Bodrum Peninsula suits holidaymakers interested in a subdued and relaxing atmosphere. The villages are enchanting, with guest-houses and small hotels on quiet bays of the peninsula.

To the south, tangerine orchards and olive groves are now giving way to popular tourist developments. Every settlement had its own boatyard, reminiscent of the days when people built their own vessels in their orchards.

On the southern coast, Bardakci, Gumbet, Icmeler, Bitez, Aktur, Ortakent Yalisi, Karaincir, Aspat, Bagla and Akyarlar have fine, sandy beaches Campers and windsurfers enjoy Gumbet, and at Bitez colorful sailboards weave skillfully among the masts of yachts in the bay.

On shore, you can enjoy quiet walks through the orange and tangerine groves bordering the beach. Turgutreis, Gumusluk and Yalikavak, all with excellent beaches, lie on the western side of the peninsula and are ideal for swimming, sunbathing and water sports.

See the north coast of the peninsula – Torba, Golturkbuku and Gundogan – by road or, even better, hire a boat and crew to explore the quiet coves, citrus groves and wooded islands.

Little windmills which still provide the energy to grind grain, crown hills covered with olive trees. Plenty of old Turkish houses with carved timbers and latticed windows provide examples of the vernacular architectural style.

The Bodrum Peninsula in Turkey isn’t short on breathtaking sights. Enjoy access to these amazing views from your own windows by booking these beautiful Bodrum villas. You’ll have sights and sounds to tantalize your senses as you gaze upon the valley around Bodrum, which features landscapes sculpted by volcanic rock. You may also have a view of the Turkish coast and the ocean beyond, even extending to the Greek Islands. The view of the historic wonders and architectural masterpieces in Bodrum itself can also be seen from many Bodrum Peninsula holiday homes:.

“Why did the bees leave” is not only an important ecological consideration but also the title of the newest exhibition now on at Vernon Projekt. But why are we telling you about a gallery exhibit in our Out and About blog? Because this “gallery” is actually a former tiny shop that serves up an exhibition of contemporary art in its windows. So free and accessible 24/7.

Swiss video artist Katja Loher’s work involves choreography, color, costumes and people. She layers her videos of people moving, thereby making human kaleidoscopes of discovery. Normally she places these videos into objects like globes or glass bubbles to make them 3-dimensional. For a flat store window though, she has chosen round portals, which give the mix of videos and still photos a microscopic feel.

Stroll by one afternoon and do some window gallery-ing!

As a child growing up, Cornwall was always a destination and location I heard about as a sunny, fun and beautiful location. Whenever a road trip was on the cards, the best option mentionable was a stay in a Cornwall cottage. I don’t know why so, but as an adult, it’s clear to me that much of the South West offers the same. However, the words Cornwall inspire a magical sense of adventure, distance, pirates, sunshine, sea, beautiful scenery and much more. It is truly a magical word.

Let’s be clear, I did not come from a very fortunate background, and a trip to Cornwall, well, did not seem to be a possibility. So quite frankly it was a distant dream and may as well as been as far away as America, in terms of my perceived expectations and hopes of visiting. Strange how, as a child, something may seem to be an impossibility, to only discover, as an adult with a car, that impossibility disintegrates every inch of the open road that leads you towards Cornwall and the many beautiful Cottage holidays.

So what did we do when we had an opportunity to think about buying a holiday cottage to be used personally, and of course as a holiday let? Well, the first thing I could think about was to visit Cornwall, as for some reason, the final chosen location would have the words Cornwall in it! I knew in my mind and heart that was going to be the case, so no point wasting time looking in other counties. It was time to just get down to it.

I had seen over the Internet a Cornish cottage that looked delicious, and for reasons unknown to me, this just kept coming round for my attention quite frequently. Well, not being superstitious or anything, I just decided to go and have a physical look and indeed found a wonderful set of cottages in a location outside Launceston called Tremeale Barn. Within the site were 8 delightful cottages, and of course, I was in the business of looking for Cottage holidays.

Long story short, I ended up dealing on all eight beautiful Cornish cottages, crazy I know, but Cornwall is such a gorgeous location, plus the grounds and scenery were fabulous, not to mention the swimming pool on site. This was a big move, taking over so many holiday cottages and the prospect of maintaining a pool, whilst my base was in London! Not for the faint hearted.

So now, we own most of Tremeale Barn which is right on the borders of Cornwall and Devon, providing a fantastic launch pad for all of Cornwall and Devon, including short journeys to some of the best beaches in the country. Visit us some day, you can find us on the Cornwall Sunshine website and if you don’t stay in one of our cottages, you should stay in Cornwall, and perhaps you and your children will also discover the magic that lies in the word ‘Cornwall’.

Defeat Aston Villa at home and mid-table Championship side Reading are all that blocks Manchester City’s route to the FA Cup semi-finals. That is the task facing the Citizens as they approach Wednesday’s fifth round fixture – an assignment which must fill Roberto Mancini’s men with confidence. Villa have already been demolished at the City of Manchester Stadium this season and, whilst having improved substantially since then, remain ensconced in mid-table. If Manchester City have real aspirations of cup glory this season, they have to approach the game with the mentality that the Villains a
